Why Hashtags Are #Important

The term, hashtag, is now a part of the general vernacular of social media users and business owners alike. Hashtags may seem like a last thought add on to a social media post but in reality are a powerful tool to help develop and reach a wider audience.

Hashtags allow you to brand, organize and promote your content and are an essential part of any marketing strategy.

Consistent use of a hashtag associated with your brand aids in creating brand-name recognition. A business specific hashtag, or hashtag campaigns should be implemented and given time for your audience to accept. An example of a wildly popular hashtag campaign was Oreo’s #OreoHorrorStories. This campaign was successful because it generated user involvement, was relevant to the time of year, Halloween, and the hashtag’s idea was clear and easily read (each word started with a capital letter).

Oreo’s hashtag gave followers the chance to share their own Oreo horror stories, and parodies of horror movies with the title changed to incorporate Oreos, for example, “The Spilling” parodying “The Shining” was tweeted with Oreo’s hashtag. A successful hashtag campaign that generates interest in your brand will increase traffic to your social media channels, and ultimately your business.

Topical hashtags can be used to organize your content for the viewers you’re hoping to reach. A potential client may find your account by searching for the hashtag #earings, and if you’ve posted content with that hashtag it will appear in their search. Topical hashtags are a great way to be discovered and widen your audience online. They should be used based on the individual post and not overdone, using only essential topical hashtags keeps your post clear and aesthetically pleasing.

Consistency is key in promoting your business with hashtags. People search using hashtags on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google + and Pinterest. With millions of social media users, logging in every day don’t waste the chance to reach them. Hashtags are a powerful tool for consumers, to find exactly what they want, and for business owners to provide a path to their content and drive traffic to their website, or business.
